A powerful earthquake struck southwestern Japan, causing destruction and loss of life. The prefectural government of Kumamoto reported at least 34 deaths. The quake also injured 86 people, with five suffering serious injuries.

The disaster destroyed homes and triggered an explosion at a mall, as well as a factory chimney collapse. Rescuers continued searching for survivors, but hopes of finding more people alive were diminishing. Further details on the earthquake and its aftermath are available from the prefectural government of Kumamoto.

The full extent of the damage and the number of people still missing are not yet clear, but the death toll is expected to rise.
